The first bicycle racing in central Leek took place on Mr Burton's field, West Street and on the old football field, Westwood Lane. These locations were probably near where the five acre Westwood recreation ground currently stands, this opened in 1879.
Leek Floral and Horticultural Society held their annual show on September 8th 1889 at Mr Burton's field, West Street. The Leek Times commented "The want of a proper athletic ground with a cinder track, was ludicrously exemplified in the bicycle races, where the machines literally wallowed through the long grass."
The Leek Flower Show sports were held on Friday evening September 11th 1891 at Burton's Field. The 600 people who attended had to watch through heavy rain all evening. There was a one mile bicycle open handicap which needed three heat and there were two spills on the slippy grass. S Vickers of Burslem CC won by half a lap from his club mate FJ Chadwick.
The following year, the show was held on the old football field in Westwood Lane on Friday evening 26th August 1892, with the main sports the next day. E Simpson won both the half and one mile bicycle races. The Leek Cyclists' Club held their five miles championship race which GG Mark won easily by a hundred yards off scratch. This was probably the last bicycle racing to take place at the ground.
Leek FC played at Westwood Lane from 1879 and used the George Hotel for facilities, the club was dissolved in 1902. Leek Town FC is a completely separate football team that was founded in 1946.
